ANOINTING OIL - PART I

6:43 AM 1/10/2006 research about Anointing oil when I came across this information!

Genesis 28:18

[set it up for a pillar]

Stone Monuments

Jacob set the stone up for a monument and anointed it to consecrate it to God as an altar (Genesis 28:18). About thirty years later he repeated his solemn vow in the same place (Genesis 35:14). It was customary to do this when commemorating great events. Moses did this at Sinai (Exodus 24:4). Joshua set up two monuments at Jordan (Joshua 4), and at Shechem (Joshua 24:26). Samuel set up one to witness victory over the Philistines (1 Samuel 7:12). Stones for memorials were allowed, but as idols were forbidden (Leviticus 26:1; Deut. 16:22). There is an unfounded tradition that the stone Jacob set up was afterwards brought to Jerusalem, later taken to Spain, then to Ireland and finally to Scotland. On what is supposed to be that very stone, the kings of Scotland sat when crowned. Edward I had it brought to Westminster and placed under the chair on which kings of England were to be crowned.

Genesis 28:18  And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.

shemen, Hebrew 8081, Strong’s

shemen,  sheh'-men; from Hebrew 8080 (shaman); grease, especially liquid (as from the olive, often perfumed); figurative richness :- anointing, × fat (things), × fruitful, oil ([-ed]), ointment, olive, + pine.

Exodus 29:7

[anoint] Hebrew:  mashach (HSN-4886), to rub or anoint with oil; consecrate.

Twenty-two Examples of Anointing

1. Aaron to be high priest (Exodus 28:41; Exodus 29:7; Exodus 30:30; Exodus 40:13; Psalm 133:2)

2. Aaron's sons to be priests (Exodus 28:41; Exodus 29:29; Exodus 30:30; Exodus 40:15)

3. Wafers (Exodus 29:2; Leviticus 2:4; Numbers 6:15)

4. Cakes (Leviticus 7:12)

5. The brazen altar (Exodus 29:36; Exodus 40:10; Leviticus 8:11; Numbers 7:1)

6. The tabernacle (Exodus 30:26; Exodus 40:9; Leviticus 8:10; Numbers 7:1)

7. The laver of brass (Exodus 40:11)

8. Vessels of tabernacle (Numbers 7:1)

9. The Messiah (1 Samuel 2:10,35; Psalm 2:2; Psalm 45:7; Isaiah 61:1; Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38)

10. Saul (1 Samuel 9:16; 1 Samuel 10:1; 1 Samuel 15:1)

17. Joash (2 Kings 11:2,12; 2 Chron. 23:11)

18. Jehoahaz (2 Kings 23:30)

19. Cyrus (Isaiah 45:1)

20. Lucifer (Ezekiel 28:14)

21. Enoch and Elijah (Zech. 4:14)

22. Paul (2 Cor. 1:21)

Exodus 30:24  And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin:

[cassia] Cassia is the aromatic bark of a shrub resembling cinnamon. It grows in various parts of the East (Psalm 45:8; Ezekiel 27:19).  The fact that cassia and the other spices were commanded to be used proves the Israelites had contact with trading caravans which visited Egypt, Syria, and Palestine.

[hin] A hin was six quarts.

Exodus 30:24-25  And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: [25] And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil.

Exodus 30:31  And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations.

Exodus 31:11  And the anointing oil, and sweet incense for the holy place: according to all that I have commanded thee shall they do.

Exodus 37:29  And he made the holy anointing oil, and the pure incense of sweet spices, according to the work of the apothecary.

Exodus 30:22-38  Moreover the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [23] Take thou also unto thee principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels, [24] And of cassia five hundred shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, and of oil olive an hin: [25] And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil. [26] And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony, [27] And the table and all his vessels, and the candlestick and his vessels, and the altar of incense, [28] And the altar of burnt offering with all his vessels, and the laver and his foot. [29] And thou shalt sanctify them, that they may be most holy: whatsoever toucheth them shall be holy. [30] And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. [31] And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations. [32] Upon man's flesh shall it not be poured, neither shall ye make any other like it, after the composition of it: it is holy, and it shall be holy unto you. [33] Whosoever compoundeth any like it, or whosoever putteth any of it upon a stranger, shall even be cut off from his people. [34] And the Lord said unto Moses, Take unto thee sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; these sweet spices with pure frankincense: of each shall there be a like weight: [35] And thou shalt make it a perfume, a confection after the art of the apothecary, tempered together, pure and holy: [36] And thou shalt beat some of it very small, and put of it before the testimony in the tabernacle of the congregation, where I will meet with thee: it shall be unto you most holy. [37] And as for the perfume which thou shalt make, ye shall not make to yourselves according to the composition thereof: it shall be unto thee holy for the Lord. [38] Whosoever shall make like unto that, to smell thereto, shall even be cut off from his people.

Exodus 30:23

[Take thou also unto thee principal spices ...]

Five Commands—the Holy Anointing Oil

1. Make holy anointing oil of: pure myrrh, 19 1/2 lbs.; sweet cinnamon, 9 3/4 lbs.; sweet calamus, 9 3/4 lbs.;  cassia, 19 1/2 lbs.; and olive oil, 6 qts. (Exodus 30:22-25).

2. Anoint the tabernacle, ark, table of showbread and its vessels, the candlestick and its vessels, altar of incense, the brazen altar and its vessels, the laver and its foot, and sanctify them to be most holy (Exodus 30:26-29).

3. Anoint Aaron and sons and consecrate them to be ministers (Exodus 30:30).

4. The holy anointing oil is not to be poured on the flesh of any man (other than priests, Exodus 30:30; Psalm 133:2), and no man is to make any oil like it to be used in Israel (Exodus 30:31-32).

5. Whoever makes any like it or puts it on a stranger shall die (Exodus 30:33).

[principal spices] The best spices.

[myrrh] Myrrh is a gum which comes from the stem of a low, thorny, ragged tree growing in Arabia and East Africa.  Pure here means free flowing.  The best exudes spontaneously from the bark while the inferior comes more abundantly by splitting the bark.  See John 19:39.

[five hundred shekels] A shekel weight was 240 grains, so 500 shekels would be 120,000 grains.  There were 5,760 grains to a troy and the apothecarie's weight per pound, so 500 shekels would come to about 21 lbs.  That we must take the apothecarie's weight of 12 ounces per pound instead of the 16 ounces of the avoirdupois weight seems clear from Exodus 30:25,35; Exodus 37:29; 2 Chron. 16:14; Eccles. 10:1.

[cinnamon] Cinnamon comes from the dried inner rind of a tree growing in Sri Lanka and the islands of the Indian Ocean (Proverbs 7:17; Song 4:14; Rev. 18:13).

[two hundred and fifty shekels] The 250 shekels was 10.5 lbs. (note above on shekel weight). The 63 lbs. of spices and 6 quarts of olive oil were combined in some way to make a texture thin enough to pour (Exodus 30:32; Psalm 133:2). The work was entrusted to Bezaleel (Exodus 37:1,29), then to Eleazar (Numbers 4:16), and later to the sons of the priests (1 Chron. 9:30). The fragance no doubt counteracted the stench of the butchering, burning, and cooking of animals in the tabernacle court. The ointment was to be used freely in every generation (Exodus 30:31), but not on anyone who was not a priest (Exodus 30:32; Exodus 29:7,21; Leviticus 10:7). Anyone who compounded any like it to use privately or sell to others was to die (Exodus 30:33).

[sweet calamus] This is a fragrant cane whose root is highly prized as a spice.  It grows in Arabia and India (Exodus 30:23; Song 4:14; Ezekiel 27:19).

Leviticus 8:2  Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and a bullock for the sin offering, and two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread;

Leviticus 8:10  And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.

Leviticus 8:12  And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

Leviticus 8:30  And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

Leviticus 8:30

[sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, ...]

The Sprinkling of Blood and Anointing Oil

The sprinkling of the blood and anointing oil together on the bodies and garments of the priests was a fitting conclusion for their consecration and of the entire rite of sanctification. Blood had been applied before this to the bodies (Leviticus 8:23-24) and to the altar (Leviticus 8:14-15). Aaron had already been anointed as high priest (Leviticus 8:10-13), so the new part of the ritual did not cleanse from sin, sanctify, or bless in any way except to show the necessity of continued trust in the blood and the need for continued anointing with the Spirit. The outward ritual of anointing with oil signified the choice of God, the calling of God, and the impartation of power for the particular work one was called to do. Priests, prophets, and kings were all anointed. If they carried out their calling they had God's support. If they sinned and failed, they received the curse of God until they repented and came back to the original calling and fulfilled it. If they never came back, the curse of God remained on them forever. This is exemplified even among angels who were once anointed (Ezekiel 28:11-17; Isaiah 14:12-14; Matthew 24:41; Rev. 12:10-12; Rev. 20:10), as well as demons and men

Jude 1:5[afterward destroyed them that believed not]

Twenty-one Examples of Beings Fallen from Grace

1. Lucifer.  He was sinless and walked in the ways of God perfectly until he sinned (§Ezekiel 28:11-17, notes).  He fell from God's favor and was cast out of heaven (Isaiah 14:12-14; Luke 10:8).  He became sinful and lustful (John 8:44) and destined to eternal hell (Matthew 25:41; Rev. 20:10).

2. Holy angels.  Over one-third of God's holy angels rebelled with Lucifer (Rev. 12:3,7-12) and became destined to hell with Satan (Matthew 25:41; Isaiah 24:21).  Many of these committed the additional sin of fornication and are now in hell (2 Peter 2:4; Jude 1:6-7).  Angels are sons of God (Genesis 6:1-4; Job 1:6; Job 2:1; Job 38:4-7) and yet those who sin are to be punished forever in hell, so sonship is no unforfeitable guarantee of heaven.

3. Demons.  They were also created sinless and in God's grace and favor. That they sinned and are doomed to eternal hell is clear from their own admission of being worthy of punishment (Matthew 8:29; Mark 5:7; Luke 8:28-32; James 2:19).  Many of them are now in the abyss (Rev. 9).

4. Pre-adamites.  According to Genesis 1:2; Isaiah 14:12-14; Jeremiah 4:23-26; Ezekiel 28:11-17; 2 Peter 3:5-8 and other scriptures, Lucifer ruled the earth before Adam and caused all the people of his kingdom to lose God's favor and be destroyed in the flood of Genesis 1:2; 2 Peter 3:5-8.  Not one person, animal, city, or plant was left alive (Jeremiah 4:23-26, notes).

5. Adam and Eve were created in God's grace or favor (Genesis 1:26-31). They fell from grace by sin and lost the eternal life they would have kept if they had not sinned (Genesis 2:17; Genesis 3:1-19; Romans 5:12-21; 2 Cor. 11:3).  Nothing is ever said of their salvation from sin.  They are not listed with the faith-worthies of the Old Testament (Hebrews 11).  Adam was still a sinner at the age of 810 years (Genesis 6:3, note).  He was a son of God (Luke 3:38).  Thus, again, sonship is proved not to be a guarantee of eternal life.  God promises to punish every angel or man who sins regardless of sonship or relationship

6. Adamites.  Every person born of Adam was once in grace in Adam and fell from grace or favor when Adam did, for they were in Adam's loins when he sinned.  This is why death passed upon all men (Romans 5:12-21; 1 Cor. 15:21-22; 2 Cor. 11:3).  If all people fell from the same favor Adam did and are commanded to regain grace in Christ, then it is settled that falling from grace and regaining it can happen more than once (note, Galatians 4:19).

7. Many Israelites.  Before their sin in Exodus 32 they were born again (Deut. 32:18; Galatians 4:28-29), redeemed (Exodus 15:13; Deut. 21:8), sanctified (Exodus 31:13; Leviticus 20:8), converted (Psalm 19:7), in grace (Exodus 33:12-17; Psalm 84:11), had their names in the book of life (Exodus 32:32-33; Exodus 69:25-29), had the same gospel we have (Galatians 3:6-14; Hebrews 4:2), and had other spiritual. When they sinned they were cut off from God and were lost (Exodus 32:32-33; 2 Cor. 10:1-18; Hebrews 2:14; Jude 1:5).  Scores of times they forsook God and were cursed (Deut. 17:3; Deut. 29:26; Judges 2:11-23; Judges 3:5-14; Judges 4:1; Judges 5:31; Judges 6:1; Judges 8:28-35; Judges 10:6-11:33; Judges 12:7-13:1; Judges 20:13; 1 Samuel 2:12-36; 1 Samuel 3:11-14; 1 Kings 11:1-13,38-39; 1 Kings 12:25-33; 1 Kings 13:33-34; 1 Kings 14:16-31; 1 Kings 15:29; 1 Kings 16:2; 2 Kings 17:7-23; etc.).

8. Nadab and Abihu, holy priests of God (Exodus 19:6; Exodus 22:31), were cut off in sin (Leviticus 10:1-20; Numbers 3:4).

9. Korah, Dathan, Abiram, and other holy men of God were cut off by sin and went to She-owl (HSN-7585) (Numbers 16:1-3,23-33).

10. Saul, who had a change of heart and received the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 10:9-13,21-24), went into spiritualism (1 Samuel 28; Leviticus 19:31; Leviticus 20:6).  He lost the Holy Spirit (1 Samuel 16:12-23), and died by suicide and was cursed by God (1 Samuel 31:1-6; 1 Chron. 10:13-14).

11. Many disciples of Jesus left Him and His grace and followed Him no more (John 6:66).  They believed for a while (Luke 8:13).  They drew back to perdition (Hebrews 10:26-39).  To receive Christ and confess Him for only a moment brings the new birth, so those who believed for awhile had grace to fall from (John 1:12; 1 John 5:1).

12. Judas was once saved because:

(1) He was a familiar friend of Christ (Psalm 41:9).  Would Christ call any unsaved man or the devil (as some suppose Judas to be) "mine own familiar friend"?

(2) Christ trusted Judas at one time or He would not have said "in whom I trusted" (Psalm 41:9).  Hebrew: batach (HSN-982), to confide in, as to be secure without fear.  Used in this sense 107 times.  Would He have confided in such a man if he had always been untrustworthy?

(3) Judas ate of Christ's bread (Psalm 41:9).  This always assures eastern people of very personal and intimate friendship.

(4) He had his name written in the book of life with the righteous (cp. Acts 1:20 with §Psalm 69:25-28, notes).

(5) He was a bishop of the church Christ is building (Acts 1:20 with Psalm 109:8).  See Thirty Facts about Judas.

(6) He had part of the apostolic ministry (Acts 1:17,25).

(7) Christ gave him power against unclean spirits to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and disease.  This was true of the twelve, Judas included (Matthew 10:1-4).

(8) He was sent forth as one of the twelve to represent Christ among Israel (Matthew 10:5-6).

(9) He was called to preach (Matthew 10:7).

(10) He was commanded to heal the sick, cleanse lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils (Matthew 10:8; Mark 3:14-15; Mark 6:7; Luke 9:1-2).

(11) He freely received power to heal and it was commanded that he freely give (Matthew 10:8).

(12) He had the peace of God to give to a home as did all others of the twelve (Matthew 10:13).

(13) He was a sheep in the midst of wolves like others of the twelve (Matthew 10:16).

(14) He had the Holy Spirit in him (Matthew 10:19-20).

(15) He was ordained by Christ to the ministry as much as the others (Mark 3:14).

(16) He was just as successful in preaching and healing as others (Mark 6:12-13; Luke 9:6,10).

(17) He was an apostle, meaning he was one divinely called and sent to do the work of God (Luke 6:13; note,  Acts 15:33).

(18) Judas fell by sin from the ministry and apostleship (Acts 1:25). How could he do this if he was always a sinner, as some say?

(19) Satan entered into Judas at the close of Christ's ministry, proving that he was not always an agent of the devil, much less one from the beginning (Luke 22:3; John 13:2).  Therefore, he backslid and became a thief (John 12:6), a devil (John 6:70, Greek: adversary), and the betrayer.  To make Judas the very devil, a devil from the beginning, and an unsaved man never in grace is to ignore the plain facts of Scripture.

(20) He once had eternal life, as proved from John 17:2 where we read of Christ giving eternal life "to as many as Thou hast given him."  Then in John 17:12 it is stated that of "those that Thou gavest Me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition."  It is clear, then, that Judas was given to Jesus and Jesus had once given him eternal life.

13.  Ananias and Sapphira were saved and of one heart and one soul with all the church (Acts 4:32-5:1), until they agreed to lie to the Holy Ghost at which time they were killed (Acts 5:1-11).  "Great grace was upon them all," including Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 4:33; Acts 5:1).

14.  The Galatians who had begun in the Spirit and had received the Spirit (Jude 3:2-4), were soon removed from Christ and grace (Jude 1:6; Jude 5:4).

15.  Demas, a preacher in the early church (Col. 4:14; Philemon 1:24) went back into sin, having loved this present world (2 Tim. 4:10).  If any man loves the world the love of the Father is not in him.  He is lost if he does not come back to God (1 John 2:15-17).

16.  Hymenaeus and Alexander were one time in the faith, but made shipwreck of it and put away faith (1 Tim. 1:19-20).

17.  Many others coveted money and erred from the faith (1 Tim. 6:10,21).

18.  Many young widows waxed cold toward Christ and cast off their first faith and were damned (1 Tim. 5:11-13).

19.  Hymenaeus and Philetus erred from the faith and overthrew the faith of others (2 Tim. 2:17-19).

20. Apostates were once saved, but fell away and departed from the faith.  See Romans 1:21-32; Hebrews 6:4-9; Hebrews 10:26-29; 2 Peter 2:20-22.

21. Many in the churches were once saved but later threatened with destruction if they did not repent (Rev. 2:5,10,16,20-23; Rev. 3:3,11,16).Besides the above examples of being cut off from God because of sin, the Bible abounds with plain laws, commands and warnings of punishment for those who return to sin.  These make it clear that there are no unconditional promises and covenants in Scripture.  Passages where no conditions are expressed are automatically limited by hundreds of kindred verses stating conditions to be met.  It is not always necessary to state the conditions in every passage.  When stated in some, it is clear they apply to all companion scriptures.  For example, in 1 Chron. 22:10 God promises to establish Solomon's throne over Israel forever, but this unconditionally stated promise is based upon obedience as seen in points 27-35 below.
